I have a confession to make...
So seeing all these crazy ursans doing runs so easily in DOA, FOW, UW, etc. I naturally got a little ticked off that all my characters were now virtually useless.
SO I caved in and made a monk, almost exclusively to level him up to 20 and then run HB builds for ursanways and bonding in FOW. I'm level 15 atm and just bought my dragon design armor (wtf at how expensive vellum is) but I've still only got my tier 1 skills.
So do I virtually have to spend all my cash buying skills from Michio to be a good monk or are there a lot I can ignore? I only ever want to be using fiarly common builds (55 farmer, ursan hb, that kind of thing). So which are the best skills for me to learn this early on?
Also, I'm used to buying 4 headsets and putting a supeior rune on each depending on which attribute it boosts however I was told this was a bad idea for monks. What's the general rule for runes on monks?
And finally, if I went and crafted some deldrimor healing and prot staves from the end of prophecies, which mods should I get on them? I'm thinking of getting a rod and an offhand, but I also like staves. Which do monks prefer?
Thanks
BTW, I'm Mo/Me

Seed of life!? Arg. Maxing Sunspear rank will take weeks for me. Is it possible to get it done in a day or less?

The basic weapon sets I use for a hybrid are:
Defensive Set
40/40 Healing Prayers set
40/20/20 Protection Prayers Staff
High Set
I normally sit in my shield set, and change when needed.
You're going to want +1 runes for healing/prot/divine depending on what you're running. Vitae and survivor runes are probably better, but since it's PvE you could get away with +energy runes.
For unlocking skills, you only really need to unlock healing and protection, since you're probably not going to run smiting.

^ If you're a good monk you shouldn't need to run 16 anyway , use minor. And use Survivor Insignia. Yea, you can get away with a lot of stuff in PvE but it never hurt to practice being good.
Look up the build you want to run and unlock those skills.
Stay in your 40/40 heal set most of the time to cast heal spell, change to prot staff or whatever that have +20% enchantment on it for enchantment like Seed skills, and switch to your defensive set if you're under pressure.
You can sit in your defensive set like most have suggested if you're good with weapon sets swapping to get the most out of your weapon sets for each skill. Though that's more of a PvP thing, doing what I suggested above is fine, unless you want to practice set swapping frequently.

I recommend swapping out Ethereal Light for Patient Spirit...that is such a sweet skill...just need to work with the 2 second delay, which isnt that much of a big deal IMO, considering how much it heals for.
Also, Sunspear rank for healing seed is irrelevant, considering how badly it got nerfed. Now, as long as you time and place your seeds right, it doesnt matter what your Sunspear rank is, it will still get the job done.

This is what i run for FoW and UW.(similar to Bruce's build)
[build=OwYT043AZaj43JHUiAZ4jIuCNCA]
Weapons
1.When taking dmg/high health set.
2.Main Casting Set. I recommend a 40/40 set but I just cant throw this staff in the storage to collect dust.
I might change the insightful to 20% HCT of healing prayers but still indecisive cuz Hb+1 20% HCT is all u need IMO.
3. High energy set. use when in emergency. switch back to normal set right after.
4.This is the set you cast HB/ seed of life/ healing seed. Divine +1 for increased duration of HB or amount of health healed with seed of life if lucky. 20% enchant for obvious reasons.
I use all radiant insignias + sup healing rune since i know what squishie means. but again personal choice if your just starting monk id recommend minor healing rune and survivor insignias.
Hope this helps!

Third, I generally go with 10% mods on my high set.
Fourth, why use a 20% enchanting mod on a sword other than on a staff?

First: +10AL against? I agree im not a fan of -5 20%.
Second: I already stated its better to use a wand/offhand i just love the tormented staff skin..i am a skin NAB.
Third: y? you wanna stay off that set as much as possible and the only skills youd use on that set are heal party maybe but mostly dwaynas kiss or ethereal light. HCT 20% FTW.
Fourth: cuz i want the +1 divine and the 20% enchant all in one weap set. to my understanding i cant do that with a staff.

1: +10AL against everything. If not everything, Fire because it's usually the "Blow-you-up" of PvE.
2: Fair enough, ignorance on my part.
3: I know that, but it's good for popping out any emergency spells of any attribute.
4: Oh, okay.

If you are running a HB build then tbh I would go for a -2 enchant inscription for your defensive set, its consistantly effective if you arent too keen on swapping shields regularly

The build i always start people off with is
12+1+1 healing, 9+1 prot, 9+1 Divine favor
[Word of Healing][Reversal of Fortune][Guardian][Protective Spirit][glyph of lesser energy][Dismiss Condition][Holy Veil][Shield of Absorption]
this build is very diverse can be used for just about every thing "even PvP" If you dont want to change to Mo/E You can add in [channeling] and take a point out of prot or divine to add it to inspiration, After you feel comfortable with that build you can take Glyph ot channeling out for something new thats works well with where your fighting "Eg i like to take [aura of stability] on Thunder head keep due to the 1st half of the mission to use on the 2nd monk if there is a 2nd monk"
As for armor NEVER USE SUB RUNES TO ARMOR, Having 75HP > having 20-50 HP on your heals that already heal most people back to full. other armor most monks use "that know some what about what they are doing" Use +minor healing/prot/Divine, 1 vitae and a sub vigor with full survivor. As for the head armor it self seeing how you don't plan to use many builds id say just get a +1 healing headset and you will be on "put the minor healing on you head just so if you do 1 day start using prot builds aswell"
For weapons
Needed
Nice to have
I use a few shields 1 for every type of damage but for pve you only really need 1, a -5/20 +30 will work Most the time in Pve seems i use fire, lighting and piercing shields.

I use minor runes myself, combined with a sup vigor. That -75 HP is a lot, especially in ursan teams, because the AI will go straight for you since everyone else has more armor and hp than you do.

Its quet simple.. Use sup runes you wanna go 55hp monk. (when going 55hp take all sup runes. at the end that means you have 4 stacking. 1 rune is optional. You also can use superior runes at HB monk. Wouldn't advice that unless you have a sup vigor to balance youre HP a bit.And ya, If youre like a smiter: different head scalp designs are quet handy. I mean very nice to have a 16/16 smiter with you doh ^^ Good Luck have fun m8 ^^
